About Chinmaya Mission
In every age, it is observed that despite scientific and material progress, man feels insecure and incomplete and happiness seems as elusive as ever. This paradox was the subject of deep investigation by the rishis (seers) of ancient India. Their conclusions, as well as the sublime vision they arrived at, are enshrined in the immortal words of the Upanishads in the Vedas and other Hindu scriptures. This ancient philosophy is called Vedanta.
Till the early 1950’s, Vedanta was the preserve of rishis in the Himalayan caves and a small group of priests. Swami Chinmayananda, who learnt Vedanta from his Gurus, Swami Sivananda and Swami Tapovan Maharaj, decided that this priceless knowledge must be taught and spread amongst the masses. Chinmaya Mission was thus born in 1953. The word “Chinmaya” means “True Knowledge”. Chinmaya Mission is an organisation where seekers of Truth come together to acquire and impart the ancient teachings of the Upanishads. The Mission pioneered the concept of spreading the man-making wisdom of Vedanta to the masses. The Chinmaya Mission today is the nucleus of a mighty global movement of spiritual renaissance encompassing a wide range of spiritual, educational and charitable activities. The special feature of the Chinmaya Movement is that it is purely voluntary in character, inspired by the spirit of service and sustained by dedicated workers committed to the cause of cultural and spiritual revival. All activities of the Mission are guided by the vision of Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda who put into practice what He preached.
